Journal to Support Creative Writing

While journaling is certainly a good way to help kids improve their writing skills, it also allows them a new method of expression. Through journaling, students learn how to consider ideas from new angles and come up with creative, new ways of thinking. Best of all, a student’s journal is a safe place where he or she can write freely without the fear of embarrassment or judgment. Journal keeping is a fantastic tool you can use to encourage the kids in your life to practice and refine their creative writing skills. We think this is simply fantastic, and hope you do to!

With questions that promote expanded possibilities, students can stretch the limits of reality. Through journaling, a student also develops a deeper understanding of the unique preferences that define him or her as an individual.

Between memorizing math facts and learning about American history, it’s important for students to have regular time for creative writing practice. Writing prompts are a great way to get kids’ minds going, as a short question or idea can inspire all kinds of imaginative reflections and creative solutions. We are sure you agree!

Until next time, write on…

Creative Writing Ideas for Kids Spring in May—

As the school year comes to a close, students get excited thinking about summer and all of the fun and relaxation ahead. The start of summer is also a great time to think about changes—the places students have been, the places they’re going, and all of the ways they are different now than when they started.

In these new journal prompts for the month of May, students will get creative as they think about the similarities and differences between various experiences. Each prompt asks students to compare and contrast two things that are seemingly different—and then, to consider the benefits of each one.

Though some instances may seem completely separate at first, students may find that there is more commonality between them than they first imagined. For instance, a student might not think that his best friend and favorite movie character have much in common—but upon further reflection, he’ll find that both individuals have a winning sense of humor. Next, students will think about the benefits of each item or experience. By looking for the good in things like Mondays, braces, and even the experience of waiting, students will practice positivity.

Each journal prompt is designed to draw out creativity, examination, and positivity in your students. Help students explore commonalities and contrasting qualities today!

Explore the similarities and differences between the following items. What are the benefits of each one?

Mondays and Fridays.

You and your best friend.

Going swimming and falling in the pool.

Being too cold and being too warm.

Singing in the choir and singing in the shower.

Books and computers.

Your mom and your dad.

Movie stars and athletes.

Brushing your teeth and washing your hands.

Recess and lunch.

Eyeglasses and braces.

Buying something with money you saved or money you received as a gift.

Waking up early and going to bed early.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and hamburgers.

Falling asleep in your bed and falling asleep at the dinner table.

Your best friend and your favorite movie character.

Batman and Spiderman.

Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon.

Video games and movies.

Ice cream with syrup, sprinkles, and candy and plain ice cream with no toppings.

The mall and an online store.

Cars and bicycles.

Diamonds and gold.

Your parents and your teacher.

Wearing jeans and wearing pajama pants.

The experience of waiting patiently and the experience of waiting impatiently.

Roses and tulips.

Racehorses and racecars.

Your favorite television show and favorite movie.

Giving a gift and receiving a gift.

The last day of school and the first day of school.

Until next time, creatively write on!

Online Bullying— A recent case involving cyberbullying resulted in the suicide death of a teenage girl. ABC News reports that three teenage boys sexually assaulted a teenage girl at a party. They took photos of her, posted them online and shared them via text messaging. The girl saw the photos online and took her own life eight days later. While the original alleged sexual battery is bad enough, the additional cyberbullying proved to be too much for this teenage girl. This is a profoundly sad example of the horrible effects of cyberbullying.

Technology has created a new channel for bullying. According to CNN, 25 percent of children experience cyberbullying at some time, and nearly 10 percent have experienced it in the past 30 days.

Schools Tackle the Problem

Many schools have anti-bullying programs in place, and some are beginning to incorporate the “cyber” element. New Jersey has enacted an anti-bullying law that includes training on how students can recognize bullying in any form and how to report it to a hotline.

Children often resist reporting cyberbullying; they may fear being identified as an accomplice, or they may fear retribution by the bully. Education is critical for the child to know how to spot the signs of bullying and report it before something serious happens.

How Do I Know If My Child is Being Bullied?

Less than 5 percent of children tell their parents they’re being bullied, CNN reported. Three common signs that children are being bullied include:

They withdraw from their normal social outlets, including social media

They seem afraid of their technology, such as being nervous when the phone rings

They act out with bad behaviors as a way to release their stress over being bullied

If you suspect that something is going on, talk to your child. If he or she is not forthcoming, speak with the parents of your child’s friends. Your child may have confided in their friends, and word may have eventually made it to the parents. Also, make sure you are educated on bullying facts.

What Do I Do If My Child is Being Bullied?

Talk to your children often. Make it a priority. Spend more time listening that talking. Assure them that they did nothing wrong, and discuss the positive things that happened in their day. Help your children become active in a number of things they like to do. Find ways for your children to expand their circle of friends. Find opportunities for them to be with children with the same interests.

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services maintains a website on how to prevent bullying, Stopbullying.gov. It contains a number of tips on how to communicate with your children if you suspect they are being bullied.

Another Cybercrime: How Do I Know If My Child’s Identity is Safe?

With the proliferation of mobile devices and social media, cyberbullying is a real threat, as are cases of child identity theft. Children are prime targets for identity thieves, because the situation often goes undetected for years, and an identity theft protection service is a useful answer once your child’s been targeted. Child identity theft is a related cybercrime. Signs that children may be victims of identity theft include:

They start receiving unusual mail, such as credit card applications

They receive a thank-you gift from a business

You try to open up a bank account for your child and are denied

Recent Lifelock service reviews attest to the ever-increasing problem of identity theft. Educate yourself on how to deal with a suspected child identify theft because the sooner you act, the easier it will be to resolve. Please know also that you can learn even more about child identity theft in this information by the Federal Trade Commission.

Protect your children from online bullying and protect their identity by getting educated, because the more you know about these modern day problems the more swiftly and effectively you will be able to deal with them should the need arise.

From electronic journaling, to digital scrapbooking, the world of recording memories is changing.

Nothing can capture the power of a memory better than a picture. If you haven’t seen the blog Dearphotograph.com, browse it for five minutes – that’s enough to demonstrate how powerful memories can be, and how important our old photographs are in preserving those memories.

Just 20 years ago, none of us had the technology to get Grandma’s immediate approval on our latest DIY sewing project for the school play or instantly share great pictures of our tiny tots. Now, through the digital magic of Pinterest, Skype, Facebook and dozens of photo-sharing websites, we can stay connected with our loved ones no matter the miles that separate us.

As enchanting as digital technology can be, its ability to preserve pre-digital-era memories is often overlooked. Most of us still have yellowing shoe boxes of old prints and slides sitting under our beds and in our attics. Those memories connect us with our past, and it’s about time we linked our pasts to our future by digitizing them.

Organize Old Media: A Trip Down Memory Lane

Most of us have probably cataloged our memories the old-fashioned way: via prints, slides and/or VHS home videos. Take a Saturday off to pull them out, look through them and organize them. It’s not only an important trip down memory lane for you, it’s a chance for your family to get to know your past.

Start organizing by year, era or event (i.e., “birthdays”). This makes it easier to parcel out themes for your digital scrapbooking projects.

Make sure to store old media in acid-free boxes and albums.

Do not keep your media in warm or bright places; even attics can cause dry rot and expose precious memories to rodents and deterioration.

Carefully wrap and designate which photos, negatives and slides you want to digitize, and wrap them carefully.

Digitize at Home or Professionally

Although many people opt to scan and digitize old prints at home, this can be time consuming, and the purchase of a high-quality scanner may not be worth your while. (If you think it is, PCMag.com recommends the Cannon CanoScan because it uses an LED source that eliminates warm-up time and can be purchased for around $200.)

Although scanning at home has its pros, many busy moms aren’t aware that your old media can easily be sent to a professional service. For example, slide scanning at Dig My Pics allows you to simply estimate the amount of media (slides, negatives, prints, even 8mm and VHS) in your box, send it in, and let the professionals handle it for you. They will size, color correct and restore and retouch your precious images for you, for about 39 cents per slide. You can follow the project online in real time as it is being completed.

Once you’ve decided which route you want to take, it’s time to . . .

Let the Scrapbooking Begin: Endless Ideas

Although Pinterest seems to be one giant digital scrapbook of amazing ideas, there are plenty of places around the Web where you can find inspiration. Scrapbooksetc.com has a host of wonderfully creative ideas and layouts that you can use online or print and add to a book. The best part about digital scrapbooking is that your book can be multimedia; you can add home movies, old slides and converted VHS tape. Preserve your family’s precious, unique history in one creative place, and add to it as your family grows. The sky is the limit.

In March, students got to know their characters through a series of prompts designed to bring out character traits and personalities. This month, students have the chance to take those same characters and put them into new and unexpected situations.

Students can use the following 30 writing prompts to write 30 individual short stories—or they can combine several prompts together to create a longer piece. In each prompt, the student’s character encounters a surprising situation or runs into a dilemma.

Informed by the traits and characteristics they developed in March, students can determine how their characters would react to each new event. The student’s sense of his or her character will also influence how he or she reads the prompt, and each student is likely to create an entirely different scenario out of the same brief setup.

These short exercises are a good way for students to get to know their characters further. While each prompt leaves enough room for the student to write an entire story if he or she desires, students can also combine several prompts to create a longer story or short book. With endless possibilities and a whole world of new things to discover, it’s easy to see why stories are one of the best forms of creative writing for kids.

For many kids, writing stories is a powerful and effective way of expressing their ideas and emotions. A story can take on many directions—it might be a mystery, a comedy, or a story with a happy ending.

Students can get totally creative and make up fanciful lands, or they can ground their stories in a familiar setting with characters they relate closely to. Regardless of the directions they take, stories provide students with the opportunity to write creatively, solve problems, and practice their understanding of others within a single activity. These five steps help kids begin writing their own stories.

Write Your Own Story: 5 Tips for Kids

1. Begin with an Action

While children’s books often begin with a simple “Once upon a time” or “There once was,” encourage kids to start their stories somewhere in the middle of the action. Suggest that they begin the story during a conversation or show some aspect of the main character’s personality from the beginning. Readers will be drawn into the story immediately—and kids may find it easier to continue writing when an event is already happening in the story.

2. Make Your Character’s Behaviors Reflect Personality Traits

Each character should have a couple of main personality traits, and students can use each character’s actions to reflect his or her identity. For example, a responsible character may be in bed promptly at 9:00 p.m. every night, while a laidback character might prefer to sleep in until noon every day.

3. Use Adjectives Liberally

When students begin writing stories, there’s really no such thing as too many adjectives. Encourage kids to describe their characters and settings in great detail. Some students struggle to give specific pictures of characters and instead use vague language. It’s much easier to take out extraneous details later than it is to create an interesting story without good descriptions.

4. Move the Story Toward an Event

Most stories move toward a particular event—and there is typically some sort of crisis or problem that must be resolved before the ending. Help students understand which details in their stories move the plot forward and which elements of the story lack purpose. If you have students who struggle to find a central climax or are unsure of a story’s ultimate direction, encourage them to use outlines. A simple outline that lists the main events in a story leading up to the action can help kids figure out which plot points they need to hit on the way there.

5. Bring the Ending Full-Circle

When it’s time for the story to end, students should explain how the problem was ultimately resolved and discuss what happened afterward. One of the best ways to end a story is to bring it full-circle from the beginning. Have students look back at the first pages of their stories and make note of key details or settings. Bring these details back in a new manner during the story’s conclusion to create a sense of closure for the story and the characters. If students are struggling with their final sentences, have them read the last sentences of some of their favorite books for inspiration.

In these 50 new journal prompts, students will consider everything from the most influential women they know to their own perceptions about men and women. They’ll answer questions about the representation of women in popular media and discriminatory language. Students will also have the opportunity to write letters to famous female figures and to think about what the word “feminism” really means.

Use these journal prompts to teach students about the importance of Women’s History Month—and to encourage kids to think more about the inequalities that women still face today.
