The Journal and Life Direction for the Pre-Teen

Journaling and Life DirectionPreteen Journal—

Young people are the most important people to any society. They are the ones that grow up and become the leaders of tomorrow and contribute to society. To become a good leader and social contributor requires a degree of self-observation, a looking at oneself as one experiences life. One of the best techniques used to look at oneself and learn from the experience of one’s own life, is to maintain a journal.

Many leaders learned at a young age the value of observing themselves through journaling. People like Einstein, the great saints, the great poets and authors, and many world leaders became what they did partly because they knew the value of experiencing their life through journaling. Journaling made it possible for these people, and even lesser known people, to see their life through their own eyes and benefit from knowledge, understanding and reflection which helped them develop into who they became. Journaling is a tool to experience life more fully for anyone wanting to catch the breadth of themselves.

There are many different benefits to journaling. Self-knowledge, understanding and reflection are built on the foundation of the other benefits. Part of that foundation is direction, a road map to the life path of the journal writer. The young person that keeps a journal has an idea of where they are going because they write their goals, their ambitions and their dreams in their journal and with each additional entry they can visualize their progress. Journaling lets us see what we want, how we’re going to get it and how well we’re doing at accomplishing what we desire.

Another benefit that journaling provides, which is another part of the foundation, is that we get to see ourselves change.  Change is something we do naturally, whether we recognize it or not, and it can alter our life direction. If we recognize change as part of our human experience we are in a better position to make the most out of those changes. Making the most out of change can become easier when we can see it. The young person who maintains a journal sees their changes visually, rather than just mentally, and they are more able to adapt to any change because they have maintained a tool, their journal, to compare life changes with the direction they are going.

Associated to change is the ability to cope with life’s ups and downs. As all of us know “life happens”. How we cope with what happens can make all the difference in to how we adapt to what happens. Many psychologists note that one of the best ways to cope with life and its ups and downs is to maintain a journal of one’s daily experiences. The journal, as something personal that is not necessarily shared with anyone else, can become a means for anyone to express their most intimate thoughts without judgment.  This benefit of the journal, in and of itself, can be liberating.

In this article we have noted some of the benefits of journal writing, all of which will enhance the life of the young journal writer. All it takes to start is a little time and effort. You don’t need to be a scholar or author to write a journal. It’s not about that. It’s about you. The first step to your growth and direction can begin with your first entry into your journal.
